I’m inspired by deadlines. I love goals and making art by the time it’s due. Deadlines make things happen–that’s been my mantra for some time now. Everyone who knows me has heard it.
THE SONG GAME
I’m also inspired by The Song Game. It was started by musician Bob Schneider years ago and his goal was to write a song a week. He participated in the game with a friend and eventually more musicians heard about it and wanted in. Including Ben Folds, Patti Griffin and Jason Mraz.
His game was simple: Create and deliver a song by the end of the week, or you’re out of the group. You can try groveling, but it might take a bit of time before you’re let back in.
There was also a weekly word, phrase or some other prompt they would have that would have to be contained in the song. It was set to prevent the musicians from working ahead and sending in something they hadn’t written that week.
WEEKLY PHOTO ASSIGNMENT (2017-2019)
I started a similar game years ago when I ran a photography art center and we had a weekly photo assignment–a word, a style of photograph or a photographic technique–that was announced online on Mondays at 11:11 a.m. and participants had until the following Monday at 11:11 a.m. to deliver their photograph. That game allowed any kind of photography–film, digital, even phone cameras. Miss the deadline and you were out.
Last year during the first pandemic summer, I went out with a 4×5 camera and a goal of not returning home until I had exposed four sheets of 4×5 film. That deadline made a project that ended up in a Boulder photo gallery last year. It was simply called 4x4x5. The header photo in this post was made for that project. Deadlines make things happen!
THE PHOTO GAME
Time for a new game for 2021.
Starting on Saturday November 13, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (UTC -7), the photo game will commence. This game is open only to film photographers working in any size medium from sub-miniature, 110, 35mm, 120 medium format to 4×5 and 8×10 large format. It just needs to be made on film.
The game will have a weekly prompt–word, phrase or technique–and photographers will have one week to complete and submit their photograph to me, due the following Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (UTC -7).
To be included, send an email to me at email@example.com, stating your intention to join the game. Then watch for an email every Saturday (8am MST) with that week’s prompt. Anyone in the world can play. You must make your work on film. To verify the work was made on film, a picture of the negative must be submitted with the photograph.
Are you up for it? You’ll be making film photographs on a weekly basis. Think of what you might create!
There will be no excuses. Miss the deadline and you’re out.
Then start your groveling.
